Race Rules

Joining the Whangarei Triathlon Club comes with a whole lot of benefits for your body and mind. You’ll learn from our experienced and friendly clubbies, including NZ reps and Ironmen/ladies, can take part in open water training at Lake Waro on Monday evenings, and enjoy the fun training meetups that we have nearly every month, all year round.

Under-13 Juniors

  • Some meets have fully offroad courses suitable for children.  Check out the facebook event info and website program for course information closer to the event.
  • For on-road meets under-13s may only compete with the written permission from parents and our club president

Swim Leg

  • Swim cap is required to be worn in the swim – brightly coloured please (so you can be seen).  Ask a clubbie if you need to borrow one!
  • Wear whatever you feel comfortable in – you will survive all our events with just togs (without a wetsuit).  The wetsuit just makes you more comfortable and usually faster.

Transition 1 and 2

  • Remember you must always secure you bicycle helmet before you un rack your bike at T1 (transition 1) and you must rack your bike at T2 before you remove it again. In most Triathlons there is usually a time penalty or disqualification for not following this rule.
  • Triathlon’s usually have a mount and dismount line for the cycle leg. In most Triathlons there is usually a time penalty or disqualification for getting on your bike to early after T1 or too late when entering T2.

Bicycle Leg

  • Roadworthy bike and helmet required.  Please visit a bike mechanic if you are unsure.
  • Races are not draft legal.  Maintain 7m (4 bike lengths) between your front wheel and the front wheel of the bike in front, unless actively overtaking.
  • Follow the road rules.  The road is open to other vehicles at our club events!
  • Ride on the left, do not cross the centre line.
  • A stop sign means just that!
  • Give way to anything bigger than you.

Run Leg

  • Use the footpath or berm where available.  On the road, run or walk facing the traffic (on the right side of the road) unless otherwise instructed.
  • Give way to anything bigger than you.
